Tanya

I turn the key in the lock and get the door open. A rush of cooking smells greets me, including the warm carrots and beets simmering in the borscht, the chopped onions and mushrooms of the potato pancakes, warm bread the way only mother can cook it.

“Tanya…Tanya, is that you?” a voice calls out to me in Russian.

“Yes, mother – I’m home,” I shout back, also in Russian. I want to be loud so she can hear me over the noise in the kitchen.

“Come in, dear – the food is nearly ready!”

I get my coat off, shake the rain from it. The weather had matched my mood on the way home – cold and dreary. I take my shoes off, drop my bag and take off my scarf. Then I head down the small hallway, past our equally small living room, and into the kitchen. I sit at the table, watch as mother continues to add herbs and spices to the borsch.

I haven’t the heart to tell her…tell her I got cut, that I lost my job.

The news will devastate her…oh, not because we’ll lose this small, crummy apartment…but because I won’t reach my dream after all.

I frown. I’m not sure why she believes in me so much anymore. I’m so old now, so much older than the other dancers. Mother knows – she was a dancer herself back in the day, even performed at the Perm Opera House in Soviet times.

The Soviet Union…Jesus. The thought sends a shudder through me. Going back to Ukraine now would be terrible, maybe even suicide. The way the war is going, the way Russia continuously pounds our country…I sigh. I don’t think I can ever go back.

But that’s just what might happen.

Now that I’m out of work my visa is useless. I’m sure they’ll cancel it on me. Then mother and I will be deported, will be forced back to Ukraine…forced into a warzone.

I can’t have that.

But…how can I stop it?

That’s when I hear it, down the hallway.

KNOCK-KNOCK-KNOCK!

The door…someone’s knocking on the door. At this hour? On a weeknight? Who the hell could it be?!

I get to the door and slowly pull it open a crack, peer out through the gap between it and the wall, the little chain-lock rattling above my eyes.

And then my eyes go wide.

It’s Eric!

“Hi,” he says, a smile-frown combination on his face.

“E-Eric,” I say. “W-what are…what are you doing here?”

“I-I wanted to come and apologize to you, Tanya. I wanted to say I’m sorry.”

“Sorry? Sorry for what?” I reach up and undo the chain-lock, pull the door open further. Eric is standing there in the same suit he was wearing earlier. His hair is wet. Clearly he’s been out in the rain.

“Sorry for everything,” he says, rolling his eyes and throwing his head back. “Sorry for the way I acted, the way I talked to you, but most of all, sorry for cutting you.”

My eyes narrow in confusion. “Why?”

“I-I…didn’t know.”

“Didn’t know what?”

“Didn’t know about you and your…your mother, how you two are trying to escape the war, could get sent back if I fire you.
